Job Description:

Assist the classroom teacher by helping physically, mentally, and/or educationally disadvantaged students learn skills that will broaden their educational experiences, contribute to their development, and assist in creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning for all students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist students with physical and/or educational needs both individually and in small groups
Collaborate with classroom teachers regarding students' needs and requirements, including IEP goals
Provide escort and mobility assistance to the student(s) when necessary
Receive oral or written instructions from the supervising teacher
Maintain student records, including progress reports, attendance, and other relevant information.
Record student learning data as directed
Assist in the preparation and distribution of lesson plan materials
Communicate positively with parents on the progress of students
Act as an expert classroom support to substitute in the absence of a teacher
Assist students with classwork
Assist with recess, supervision, restroom breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, etc.
Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
Attend meetings and professional development training as required
Prepare materials for class projects
Interact positively with staff, students, and parents
Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation
Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher/Principal
May be required or asked to assist with diapering and/or toileting students
*toileting responsibilities may be required*
 
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Experience working with young children
Ability to implement behavioral goals
Ability to understand child development
Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
Practical, active listening skills
Ability to work effectively with others
Organizational and problem-solving skills
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
4-year degree preferred
Two years of experience with children
Associate's degree or Para Pro certificate
Experience working in a school setting; public school preferred
Experience working with students with special needs
Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
