Job Description:

Location: Brooklyn Middle School

Position Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Special Education Director and School Principal, the special education teacher supports the academic and social development of students with disabilities by delivering instruction aligned with each student's Individualized Education Plan. 
Program (IEP) and the general education curriculum, in accordance with state standards.
 
Essential Functions:
Design and implement specialized instructional strategies based on students’ IEP goals and the Connecticut State Standards.

Conduct assessments and diagnostic evaluations to identify students' learning needs and inform instruction.

Participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings and contribute to the development and implementation of IEPs.

Support students and general education staff in carrying out IEP accommodations and modifications.

Collaborate with school administrators, related service providers, and other educators to support students’ academic progress and access to the curriculum.

Maintain open and consistent communication with families to support student learning and foster school-home partnerships.

Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with educational best practices and compliance standards.

Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with school district policies and applicable laws.

Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that supports student growth.

 
Additional Duties:
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or district administrators.

 
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of special education principles, teaching strategies, and legal requirements.

Proficient in differentiated instruction and lesson design tailored to varied learning profiles.

Competence in data collection, analysis, and using student data to inform instruction.

Familiarity with relevant federal and state education laws and compliance practices.

Ability to effectively utilize educational technology and software systems.

Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Commitment to continuous improvement and professional growth.

 
Education and Experience:
Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or a related field.

Preferred: Master’s degree in Special Education.

Experience: Successful prior teaching experience in special education.
