Elementary Special Education Teacher (1 position)

Westbrook Public Schools is looking for a Full Time Elementary Special Education Teacher to join our team for the 2024-2025 school year.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF POSITION:
A special education teacher is responsible for providing individualized education and support to students with diverse learning needs. This role involves creating and implementing tailored educational plans that promote academic, social, and emotional development in a supportive classroom environment. They will work collaboratively with general education teachers, parents, and support staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for students.

Qualifications/Certifications:
    Valid Connecticut certification in special education  (065, 165, or 265)
    Experience in a (elementary, middle, or high) school setting desired 
    Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred
    Experience working with students of diverse learning needs is preferred
    Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
    Ability to work collaboratively with a team of educators, support staff, and families

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
    Collaborate with parents, administrators, and other professionals to create tailored IEPs that reflect the student’s academic and social needs.
    Deliver specially designed instruction utilizing research-based strategies in reading, mathematics, and/or writing skills to eligible students. 
    Develop and maintain individualized skill-appropriate lesson plans that are focused on student needs, interests, abilities, and backgrounds. 
    Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique needs of students that include specific, measurable goals and objectives to track student progress.
    Use a variety of teaching methods, accommodations, and modifications to meet the diverse needs of students.
    Background in assistive technology tools preferred. 
    Regularly assess student progress towards IEP goals and adjust instruction and/or strategies as needed.
    Keep accurate records of assessments, assignments, and behaviors.
    Prepare reports for parents and school staff on student progress and development.
    Create a positive and engaging classroom atmosphere that fosters student growth and confidence.
    Ensure supervision of students at all times throughout the school day. 
    Prepare for and participate in IEP meetings using data to drive the decision-making process. 
    Stay informed about current best practices and legal requirements in special education.
    Attend professional development opportunities as needed. 
    Maintain inventory of educational materials and supplies. 
    Knowledge of the Connecticut special education platform, CT-SEDS, is preferred.
    Other duties may be assigned by the administration.
