TOURTELLOTTE MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
Reports To: Building Administrator and Director of Special Education
General Duties: To develop appropriate classroom activities in an environment where students can learn effectively.
Responsibilities:
•Modify and accommodate all work/tasks to the individual learners in the program through differentiated instruction.
•Network with local businesses to take students into the community
•Implement Interest inventories and Transition assessments
•Help build opportunities for inclusion-based learning when appropriate (LRE).
•Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
•Create opportunities for appropriate recreation and leisure activities.
•Provide escort and assistance to students as necessary (especially in the community).
•Maintain work and study areas.
•Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.
•Develop materials and group lessons.
•Develop, collect baseline data, and analyze to help remediate students’ gaps in learning.
•Lifting during transfers and repositioning if needed.
•Assist with toileting, hygiene, and feeding if needed.
•Required to attend upcoming Safety Care training for de-escalation techniques.
•Required to participate in an aquatics program (be in the pool with students).
•Knowledge of classroom strategies to help with de-escalation.
•Able to assist the student(s) when met with a challenge by physical needs when necessary, such as outbursts, running, etc.
•Provide students with opportunities in the community/Transitional work trials
•Develop sensory diet techniques and strategies.
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Services or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
•Meet Connecticut teaching requirements through CSDE for Special Education:
o A Bachelor’s Degree or beyond in any area of Special Education, OR
o Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 college credits), OR
o Meet the standard of performance set by the State of Connecticut.
•Special Education Severe Intellectual Disabilities certification preferred (165).
•Demonstrated aptitude for working with a special needs population.
•Knowledge of FBA, BIP, and Manifestations.
•Knowledge of the Unique Learning Curriculum and CCCS.
•Knowledge of MTSS/PBIS.
•Experience with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
•Knowledge of PEC’s (Picture Exchange Communication).
•Documented experience and/or training with students who have Autism, medically fragile, multi-handicapped students,
intellectual impairments, and behaviors that interfere with learning.
•Knowledge of DDS as well as PCPs (MAPS, PATH, Essential Lifestyle Planning and Personal Futures Planning).
•Knowledge of Transition Services, Self-Determination & Self-Advocacy.
•Must possess good communication skills and patience.
•Completion of a successful interview.
•Proficient in Excel, Microsoft Suite, PowerPoint, Outlook
