Job Description:

The Special Education Teacher provides instruction in the following areas: academic, social, behavioral, adaptive, transition (post-secondary and employment), and/or functional living skills by differentiating instruction and using a variety of teaching strategies, materials, and assistive technology to initiate and reinforce learning. S/he assesses students’ strengths and areas for improvement through formal and informal evaluation measures. Develops and/or modifies curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to students’ instructional levels and individual needs. S/he collaborates with colleagues, parents, and the community to ensure the success of all students. Responsible for meeting standards defined in Connecticut’s Common Core of Teaching and for helping students to meet the expectations defined in Connecticut’s Common Core of Learning. Performs related work as required or assigned by her/his supervisor(s).

Education and/or Experience:
 
Must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
Prior job-related experience is required.
Certifications/Licenses/Registrations Required:
Valid Connecticut Special Education Teaching Certificate for appropriate level of instruction and/or subjects.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of the impact of various disabilities on student learning.
Knowledge of general principles of SRBI and how it relates to special education.
Knowledge of assistive technology devices that can help students access the general curriculum.
Knowledge of content and curriculum of grade levels of students on caseload.
Ability to:
Apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
Assess student needs in order to develop and implement IEPs.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, parents and the community.
Establish a rapport with all students.
Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and the community.
Lift or position non-ambulatory students.
Use physical restraint as a last resort to ensure student and adult safety

Regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
Occasionally required to:
Stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
Lift, push, and/or move up to 50 pounds such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
