Special Education Teacher 

 

Position Title: Special Education Teacher - JTPS

Location: John Trumbull Primary School

Position Reports To: Interim Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services, Interim 

Director of Curriculum and Instruction for General and Special Education 

and Building Administrator

Required Certifications & Qualifications

Current State of Connecticut Teaching Certificate  #165, 113, 065, 265

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with students with special needs in elementary grade levels

Essential Skills, Knowledge Performance Abilities

  • Works collaboratively in a co-teaching model to plan and implement instruction in a semi-self-contained SEL Program at the primary school

  • Works to create a positive classroom and school culture

  • Provides academic, social, emotional, and behavioral supports through the preparation and implementation of engaging, interactive lessons designed to ensure all students have access to and continue to make progress in the general education curriculum

  • Serves as case manager to assigned students, including the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) based on student’s present levels of performance

  • Collaborates with and assists the Board Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA) and general education teaching staff in implementing students’ IEPs and the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans

  • Conducts comprehensive diagnostic academic evaluations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues and/or social-behavioral needs in order to recommend courses of action that maximize learning in multiple learning environments

  • Observes, collects data, and evaluates students’ progress toward achieving IEP goals and objectives

  • Prepares and shares reports on students’ performance at Planning and Placement Team meetings and other informal parent meetings

  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents

  • Implements effective behavioral strategies and techniques based on students’ needs

  • Provides meaningful and differentiated instruction for all academic content areas

  • Works with all staff to modify and accommodate for students with special needs to facilitate their access to classroom instruction, activities, field trips, recreational opportunities, etc.

  • Plans for and oversees paraeducators’ schedules and day to day interactions with students

  • Directs, schedules and assists in training paraprofessional staff to support student learning

Perform all other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services and/or the Building Administrator

Based on the working agreement between the Watertown Board of Education and the Watertown Education Association
