Qualifications:
- Connecticut Administrative Intermediate Certificate Required: 092
- Comprehensive Special Education Certification required
- Additional Preferred Endorsements: 265 , 065
- Extensive experience in Special Education
- Bilingual skills are a plus but not required
- Additional requirements as determined by the Board may be advisable.
Reports To: Executive Director of School and Family Supports
Supervises: Department staff (Teachers, Paraeducators, and Related Services)
Job Summary: The Special Education Supervisor provides leadership, supervision, and coordination for Secondary Special Education Programs, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations while fostering an inclusive educational environment for all students.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Policy Development: Assist in the formulation and implementation of departmental policies and regulations.
- Program Management: Develop, implement, and evaluate instructional programs tailored to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Climate and Culture: Promotes a positive school culture and climate.
- Staff Supervision: Supervise and evaluate department members, coordinating their activities throughout the academic year.
- Professional Development: Plan and oversee orientation and in-service training programs for staff on an annual basis.
- Meeting Coordination: Conduct regular department meetings to facilitate communication and collaboration.
- Staff Recruitment and Assignment: Assist in the recruitment, screening, and assignment of departmental staff.
- Planning and Placement Team Leadership: Attend and/or lead Planning and Placement Team meetings, particularly those involving litigation, out-of-district placements, or significant costs.
- IEP Compliance: Ensure adherence to guidelines for the development, monitoring, review, and revision of Individual Educational Programs (IEPs) per state and federal regulations.
- Scheduling and Curriculum Development: Collaborate with staff to schedule students for academic classes, determine course offerings, assign instructors, and develop curriculum.
- Assessment and Evaluation: Ensure that assessment and evaluation processes are conducted according to prescribed procedures and assist in determining the completeness of assessment data for diagnostic and placement decisions.
- Program Communication: Facilitate the interpretation of special education programs to staff, the Board of Education, and the community.
- Additional Responsibilities: Perform other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director of School and Family Supports or designated representative.
Note: In program matters, the supervisor is primarily accountable to the Executive Director. For building-related issues, the supervisor is primarily accountable to the building principal.
Terms of Employment: Salary and work year are determined by the Board of Education in conjunction with the Administrators’ Bargaining Unit.
Evaluation: The Supervisor of Special Education will be evaluated annually by the Executive Director of School and Family Supports, in accordance with the district's performance evaluation guidelines.
