Job Description:

Position: Chief School Administrator Reports to:Governing Board

Essential Job Functions:The Governing Board requires the Chief School Administrator to plan, organize and direct the overall management of business functions and establish a clear understanding for staff of the purpose and mission of the school.

Education & Certification:

•       Master of Social Work, or Counseling Degree Preferred

•       Intermediate Administration and Supervision (092) required

Preferred experience:

•       Previously worked at an LEA in CT and has worked with school districts

•       Understands students with Autism and the needs of the Meliora student population

Performance Responsibilities Administrative:

•        In consultation with the Governing Board, prepares the agenda for each meeting of the Board.

•        Participates in all deliberations of the Governing Board, except for those instances when the Board is discussing the performance and/or compensation of the Chief Administrator and asks her not to be present.

•        Recommends to the Governing Board policies on all matters that are related to the effective operation of the school.

•        Develops administrative principles and procedures for implementing Board policies, and with staff, provides appraisal, when needed, of all policies originating with the Governing Board.

•        Directs planning on all matters that are related to the effective operation of the school.

•        Communicates actions of the Governing Board to employees and receives from employees all

communications to be made to the Board.

•        Recommends employees to the Board for appointment or dismissal.

•        Acts on his/her own discretion if action is necessary on any matter that is not covered by Board policy and reports to the Board as soon as possible.

Additional Responsibilities 

•       Interact with school districts and other agencies in order to obtain educational information, including Individualized Education Programs (IEP), concerning enrolled students and/or students who are being considered for enrollment; 

•       Meet with families and work with them on admissions and recommendations to school districts;

•       Communicating with parents regarding routine matters and when boundaries are overstepped;

•       Provide for a review of current research and literature in Special Education to assist staff in attaining information specific to their area of expertise.

•       Providing required notice to parents of disciplinary actions;

•       Coordinate safety and emergency procedures;

•       Ensure that program staff receive a copy of educational information including IEPs, concerning enrolled students, assist staff in understanding their roles and responsibilities in implementing the IEP

•       Secure supplies appropriate to student needs and curriculum requirements

•       Interacting with school districts and other agencies regarding contracts for services and matters related to payments in accordance with such contracts.

•       The Chief Administrator will develop a set of performance objectives based on the needs of the school.

•       Assist the Education Director in identifying consultant services relative to teaching materials, methods, instructional services, and behavioral management techniques to assist the school in providing quality programming.

•       Directs the preparation of the annual budget for adoption by the Governing Board and implements the budget as enacted by the Board.

•       Confers periodically with professional and lay groups concerning the school program and transmits to the Board suggestions ascertained from such conferences.

•       Work with the education director ensuring IEP's align to the CCSS

•       Member of PDEC and IRB

•       Represents the school in its dealings with other school systems, institutions, parents, agencies community organizations, and the general public.

•       Attend professional meetings of state and national scope within the limit of funds budgeted for this purpose, and provides for attendance of staff at similar meetings with the purpose of keeping them informed of current developments in education.

•       Adjust the physical environment to accommodate changing student needs.

•       Ensure safety standards, repairs and improvements are completed in a timely fashion

Professional Growth:

•        Provide for appropriate in-service training, workshops, and meetings to keep staff informed of current practices and trends in Special Education.
