Job Description:

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Provide various forms of instructional assistance and support to the teachers. The paraeducator will work with children with special education needs. 

 TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist students, under the direction of the teacher or therapist, with assignments or learning/therapeutic activities
  • Plan the execution of follow-up activities to reinforce initial instruction provided by the teacher
  • Work with children individually and in small groups to reinforce basic skills and to check their use of instructional materials
  • Assist in the development and construction of materials to be used in reinforcement activities
  • Share in the maintenance of the classroom
  • Help describe the instructional program to the community and encourage parent involvement
  • Attend all meetings as requested
  • Serve as translator when necessary
  • Assist the teacher in escorting the children
  • Assist in all behavior modification systems in the school
  • Supervise time-out according to established procedures
  • Assist in the supervision and maintaining control of student conduct throughout the building, including returning students to school who have run from the building
  • Assist in producing, collecting, inventorying, and storing instructional materials
  • Assist in maintaining school attendance records
  • Procure, set up, operate and return instructional equipment
  • Organize and supervise student work areas
  • Assist in preparing bulletin boards and exhibits
  • Correct objective tests and assignments
  • Assist with field trips
  • Provided one to one assistance as outlined in the student’s IEP
  • Maintain appropriate time-out records
  • Maintain order in the classroom in the teacher’s absence; notify the school administrator in such cases where behavior and/or other problems arise beyond paraeducator’ s control
  • Greet visitors in a courteous and professional manner
  • Assist staff with student home visits
  • Assist in physically restraining students according to established procedures if authorized and trained to do so, and if the situation requires
  • Assist in the toileting process for students as necessary
  • Assist in the feeding of students as directed and supervised by the teacher and nurse
  • Attend PPT meetings as required
  • Participate in all in-service training/staff meetings offered by the department
  • Lift students when necessary
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of students from the bus
  • Perform other related duties as required

 SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates Degree, or 60 credit equivalent,
  • or a High School Diploma and any amount of credits with passing of ParaPro (ParaPro Exam Link https://www.ets.org/parapro.html)
  • Previous experience working with groups of children
  • Patience and understanding of children with special needs
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills desirable

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Pay will be commensurate with experience, education level, and in accordance with the Hartford Federation of Paraeducators' (HFP) Collective Bargaining Agreement salary schedule. This is a 10-month position, and the salary range for school year 2024 – 2025 is $23,876 to $43,630 per year.
