INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE / SPECIAL EDUCATION (Middle School)

OBJECTIVES

Under the supervision of the Principal/Teacher/Asst. Dir., Student Services, assists in the instruction of special needs

students (mentally and physically handicapped and learning disabled students) requiring patience, understanding,

affection and firmness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Implements instructional plans in academics, vocational, and survival skills according to the goals and objectives of

each special education student.

Mainstream Classes

 Monitors and assists Resource and LC students individually or in small groups with assigned classwork, projects,

presentations, etc.

 Maintains files of daily handouts, homework assignments, projects and presentations.

 Communicates with teachers to assess the needs and progress of Resource/LC students.

Resource / LC Classroom

 Tutors individual or assists small groups of students with organizational skills, academics, homework

assignments, past due assignments, test and quiz reviews, short and long term projects and presentations.

 Communicates with Special Education Teacher to assess needs and progress of Resource/LC students in

mainstream class.

 Monitors academic tests quizzes, and homework assignments.

 Maintains appropriate standards of behavior.

 Monitors Resource/LC students when teacher attends Special Education meetings, team meetings, PPT, annual

reviews, etc.

 Prepares classroom instructional materials.

 Supervises students at morning recess and dismissal.

 Communicates student personal hygiene and chronic illness to school nurse.

 Operates a personal computer, TV/VCR, overhead projectors, etc.

 Monitors student assessments, charting and substitutes for teacher.

 Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 Knowledge of the requirements, practices and procedures involved to instruct special needs students both in

small groups and individually.

 Skill and sensitivity to work with mentally and physically handicapped or learning disabled students requiring

patience, understanding, affection and firmness.

 Knowledge in the operation of a personal computer utilizing software application, Power School, and other office

and instructional equipment.

 Ability to perform clerical duties.

 Ability to perform physical requirements when lifting or transferring physically handicapped students.

 Ability to discipline students in a positive but firm manner when required.

 Ability to supervise special needs students during non-academic activities.

 Ability to informally assess student behavior and recommend improvements.

 Ability to substitute and monitor classes in the absence of the teacher.

 Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with others.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Operates a personal computer and other related software, TV/VCR, overhead projector, laminator, handicapped

equipment, copier, typewriter, fax machine and other standard office equipment.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL EFFORT

Must be able to sit or stand at an assigned location, walk long halls on different floors, work continuously for extended

periods of time, bending, reaching, lifting and transferring physically handicapped students

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)

Graduation from high school plus specialized training and 6-9 months of related experience or equivalent.
