Must hold current CT State Certification with Speech/Lang Pathologist Endorsement. 

Position is split between Rochambeau Middle School and Pomperaug High School.

Position start date, April 2024. 

Speech-Language Pathologist

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a Masters’ Degree, or equivalent, in Speech Pathology and have

certification as a Speech Pathologist by the Connecticut State Department of

Education and be licensed by the Connecticut State Department of Health.

Advance graduate work shall include courses in anatomy and physiology of the

vocal mechanism, phonetics, speech and language disorders and remediation,

diagnostic procedures, and auditory assessment and rehabilitation. Preferably

graduate work in psychology and education of the communicatively-challenged

should be included.

ILLUSTRATIVE: The Speech-Language Pathologist shall be thoroughly knowledgeable in all

DUTIES & aspects of speech, language and hearing disorders, their diagnosis and

RESPONSIBILTIES remediation. This position involves the provision and improvement of

communication competencies for all children in the Region – especially those

children presenting educationally challenged communication behavior.

Examples of Duties

1. Select and use appropriate screening and assessment procedures for the

identification and comprehensive diagnosis of speech, language and hearing

disorders.

2. Analyze and interpret testing results and make recommendations to provide

a basis for formulating goals, objectives and planning procedures to be

utilized in the IEP.

3. Serve as an active participating member of the Planning and Placement

Team and assist the Planning and Placement Team in designing and

implementing an IEP to meet the speech, language and hearing needs of

communicatively challenged children.

4. Develop and prescribe individualized instructional goals, objectives,

scheduling model, procedures, and evaluation designs for each

communicatively challenged child.

5. Review each case annually to assess the progress and degree of attainment

of goals and to recommend termination, continuation, and/or revision of

services.

6. Provide direct service in individual or small group sessions for a minimum

of two thirty-minute periods weekly, with permissive increase or decrease

as individual needs warrant.

7. Provide indirect service through trained paraprofessional home programs

provided by parents and in consultation with classroom teachers.

8. Provide consultative services in the area of communication disabilities by

working closely with classroom teachers and staff, helping them to

understand the needs of children with communication disorders/deviations;

providing suggestions and encouragement in assisting teachers to help in

speech and language carry-over; offering formal and informal in-service

programs, and offering occasional classroom demonstration lessons.

9. Work with parents and offer them information on prevention of language,

speech and hearing problems, and activities to develop speech and language

in their children.

10. Arrange at least two parent-clinician conferences yearly to report on the

child’s program.

11. Send progress reports regularly or at least four times a year (at report card

time), helping parents to understand the program and procedures.

12. Provide in-service programs in speech and language development for

parents.

13. Cooperate with other members of the Student Services/Special Education

Department in conforming to the guidelines, state and federal regulations

and laws in the provision of services to these students.

14. Attend regular monthly meetings; provide the Director of Student Services

with necessary statistical information and/or reports; and assist in ordering

materials and supplies needed for the program.

STAFF-LINE Work under the direct supervision of the Building Principal and the Director

RELATIONSHIPS of Student Services. The former supervises these teachers for conformance to

building policies and regulations; while the latter is responsible for the

organization and supervision of the special education programs for conformity

to the established policies and needs of the Region, the State and Federal

guidelines, regulations and laws regarding Special Services and Special

Education programs.
