Special Education Teacher
REPORTS TO: Building Administration/Director of Pupil Services
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Special Education Teacher serves as a guide and
model to the student learning process. The teacher should challenge each student to
his/her highest potential. The teacher will enforce school rules, administrative
regulations, and Board policy which govern student conduct. The teacher will provide to
parents or guardians a review of the student’s progress. The teacher will implement that
portion of the instructional program for which he/she has been specifically assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid Connecticut Teaching Certification
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university or college
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Classroom Environment, Student Engagement and Commitment to Learning
● Creates a positive learning environment that is responsive to and respectful of the
learning needs of all students
● Promotes developmentally appropriate standards of behavior that support a
productive learning environment for all students
● Monitors and responds to student behavior (Schoolwide, BIP, FBA, IEP directed)
● Manages materials, supplies, and equipment
● Maximizes instructional time by effectively managing routines and transitions
● Communicates thoroughly, effectively, and efficiently with colleagues,
administrators, and families
Knowledge of Students’ Developmental Characteristics and Disability Impact
● Knowledge of students’ interests, cultural heritage, disability and impact, IEP,
goals, and objectives
● Develops IEP goals and objectives; they should be specific, measurable,
attainable, based on present levels of performance, and appropriate to the students
served
● Assesses services to meet the needs of students
Management, Organization and Compliance
● Knowledge of and compliance with BOE policy, State and Federal regulations
pertaining to students with disabilities (FERPA, IDEA, FAPE, LRE)
● Experience with the CT-SEDS platform
● Knowledge of and compliance with mandated procedures, timelines, and district
Pupil Services protocols
● Effective use of the district student data management system
● Maintains accurate records
● Implement IEP with fidelity
● Case management
● Technically compliant IEPs
● Oversight of assigned paraeducators according to grade level needs/expectations.
Includes schedule development, sharing information about students/needs, routine
check-in, brainstorming solutions to problems, providing materials, and providing
feedback to administration for end-of-the-year evaluations
Planning and Instruction for Active Learning
● Plans and implements instructional content that is aligned with standards, builds
on students’ prior knowledge, and provides for appropriate level of challenge for
all students
● Planning instruction to cognitively engage students in the content
● Demonstrates knowledge of content
● Selects appropriate strategies to monitor students’ progress
● Leads students to construct meaning and apply new learning through the use of a
variety of differentiated and evidence-based learning strategies
● Implements formative assessment of student learning and provides feedback to
students while adjusting instruction
● Experience with structured literacy instruction and program implementation
