SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL
Reports To: Classroom Teacher, Building Administrator, and Director of Special Education
General Duties: To assist the student(s) in all aspects of learning opportunities and activities of daily living as well as assist the teacher as needed.
Responsibilities:
• Assist student academically in all settings throughout the school day.
• Assist with mobility and orientation.
• All aspects of ADL’s when necessary.
• Maybe required to lift during a student transition and reposition (primarily for students that are non-ambulatory).
• Assist with toileting and hygiene/self-care skills.
• Assist with feeding.
• Help student(s) with organizational skills.
• Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
• Assist with the supervision of students during student free time.
• Escort and provide assistance to student(s) when necessary.
• Assist teacher in maintaining work and study areas.
• Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.
• With teacher supervision, correct student work and give additional work to help remediate student’s weaknesses.
• Attend meetings to help organize weekly programs of instruction and discuss problematic students and situations if required.
• With teacher supervision, participate in discipline procedures and prescribe consequences for student behavior.
• Collect data as needed when asked.
• Attend upcoming CPI training for de-escalation techniques and strategies.
• Required to attend and participate in aquatics program (must be in the water with the student(s)).
• Able to assist the student(s) when met with a challenge by physical needs when necessary, such as outburst, eloping, etc.
• Maintain a cooperative staff relationship with all personnel functioning within the educational setting.
• Work in the community to assist with Transitional goals.
• Assist teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing behavior or academic skills based on an understanding of individual
student needs, interests, and abilities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher/or the Director of Special Education or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
• Be of good character
• Hold a High school Diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
• Meet Connecticut instructional assistant requirements:
• Complete at least two years of post-secondary education.

2. Pass a related assessment (Praxis Para Pro Assessment).
